What Makes Huntington Doors Work Different

Huntington is not a tract-home town. The homes here are varied, often custom-built, and often architecturally significant. A good door installation job on a Huntington colonial is not the same as a good door installation job on a Hicksville split. The details matter more, the materials are usually premium, and the homeowners usually care about how the finished house looks from across the street.

Huntington village proper: Pre-war colonials, Victorians, and shingle-style homes on the streets around Main Street and New York Avenue. Some are in a local historic district. These demand cedar, premium, or premium trim work.

Cold Spring Harbor and Lloyd Harbor: Waterfront and near-waterfront estates. Large budgets, architecturally sensitive properties, often custom specs. Real Western Red Cedar is common here. So is Artisan by Therma-Tru (the premium premium line with deeper shadow lines and thicker planks).

Huntington Station: More traditional suburban stock, 1960s-70s splits and colonials. These work well with standard premium Plank or premium insulated fiberglass.

Dix Hills and Melville: Larger 1970s-90s custom colonials. These are great premium Plank candidates.

Fort Salonga and Centerport: Mix of waterfront and interior lots. Salt exposure on the waterfront homes. Cedar or premium is the usual recommendation there.

Things We Think About on Every Huntington Job

North Shore salt air. Homes within a mile of Huntington Harbor, Lloyd Harbor, or Cold Spring Harbor see meaningful salt exposure. Standard fiberglass will fade faster here. Fiber cement (premium), engineered wood (Therma-Tru), or real cedar are the right calls.

Historic district review. Portions of Huntington village are in a local historic district with architectural review for exterior changes. We have handled the paperwork for several houses here and we know the review board's preferences (cedar shingles, certain color palettes, specific trim details).

Mature trees and long driveways. Huntington has some of the most heavily wooded residential neighborhoods on the Island, especially in Cold Spring Harbor and Lloyd Harbor. Long driveways make dumpster placement easier but add travel time from the shop. Wooded lots bring woodpeckers, which destroy real cedar (we recommend Therma-Tru instead in these areas).

Hi-end customer expectations. Huntington homeowners generally expect a higher level of detail and communication than the LI average. We over-communicate on these jobs. Daily photos, daily progress updates via text, a walk-through at the end of every phase, not just the end of the job.

Longer lead times in historic districts. Add 2-4 weeks to the schedule for historic district review in Huntington village.

Huntington Building Permits

Huntington has its own town building department, which is the busiest in northern Suffolk. Permit turnaround is typically 10-15 business days for standard door installation work.

Historic district note: Portions of Huntington village fall under architectural review. We submit plans to the review board, schedule our presentation, and handle any revisions. Plan on an additional 2-4 weeks for historic review. We have never had a doors application denied in Huntington village.

Fees: Based on project value, typically $400-$900 for a standard redoor installation job.

Reviews from Huntington customers

Review 1: "I'm a skeptical customer. I got four quotes, read every Google review twice, and called two of their references. Long Island Door Co. was not the cheapest. They were the ones who answered the phone, showed up when they said they would, and didn't move the price after we signed. I'd hire them again tomorrow." — Paul M., Huntington · Insulated fiberglass · 2024

Review 2: "Our 1920s colonial needed real cedar and every other contractor talked us into premium. James was the only one who said yes to real cedar, explained the maintenance honestly, and handled the historic review submission. Three years later and the cedar has silvered beautifully. It looks like the house it was meant to be." — David and Amy L., Huntington village · Real Western Red Cedar · 2022

Review 3: "The waterfront door installation job at our Lloyd Harbor house was complicated by a difficult staging area and a tight HARB timeline. James's team delivered on every commitment and finished on budget. The cedar has held up beautifully through two winters. We would recommend them to anyone." — Sarah T., Lloyd Harbor · Therma-Tru · 2023
