What Makes Huntington Doors Work Different
Huntington is not a tract-home town. The homes here are varied, often custom-built, and often architecturally significant. A good door installation job on a Huntington colonial is not the same as a good door installation job on a Hicksville split. The details matter more, the materials are usually premium, and the homeowners usually care about how the finished house looks from across the street.
Things We Think About on Every Huntington Job
North Shore salt air. Homes within a mile of Huntington Harbor, Lloyd Harbor, or Cold Spring Harbor see meaningful salt exposure. Standard fiberglass will fade faster here. fiberglass (premium), engineered wood (Therma-Tru), or real cedar are the right calls.
Historic district review. Portions of Huntington village are in a local historic district with architectural review for exterior changes. We have handled the paperwork for several houses here and we know the review board's preferences (cedar shingles, certain color palettes, specific trim details).
Mature trees and long driveways. Huntington has some of the most heavily wooded residential neighborhoods on the Island, especially in Cold Spring Harbor and Lloyd Harbor. Long driveways make dumpster placement easier but add travel time from the shop. Wooded lots bring woodpeckers, which destroy real cedar (we recommend Therma-Tru instead in these areas).
Hi-end customer expectations. Huntington homeowners generally expect a higher level of detail and communication than the LI average. We over-communicate on these jobs. Daily photos, daily progress updates via text, a walk-through at the end of every phase, not just the end of the job.
Longer lead times in historic districts. Add 2-4 weeks to the schedule for historic district review in Huntington village.

Door Installation Details Specific to Huntington
Huntington's coastal geography drives a specific material calculus. Homes within a mile of Huntington Harbor, Lloyd Harbor, or Cold Spring Harbor see enough salt air to accelerate corrosion on steel frames and cause premature finish failure on painted wood. Fiberglass — specifically insulated foam-core fiberglass — is the go-to recommendation for anything in the waterfront belt. For Huntington Station and Dix Hills homes further inland, steel core doors deliver strong security value in denser neighborhoods at a lower price point.
The Town of Huntington's building department processes permits for all exterior door work that changes a rough opening. Standard same-size swaps are generally exempt, but any enlargement — adding a sidelite, widening from 32" to 36", or cutting a new opening — requires a permit. Huntington is one of the busier permit offices in northern Suffolk, so 10–15 business days is a realistic turnaround. Impact-rated options for FEMA coastal zones are available across our full door lineup and are worth considering for properties in any of the harbor-adjacent flood zones.
