Storm Door Installation Cost on Long Island and What Affects It

A storm door is one of the smaller door projects on a Long Island home. The price still swings a lot from one job to the next. Most of that swing comes from the door you pick, not the labor.

This guide covers typical price ranges and what pushes a job up or down. It also covers what a fair quote should list.

Think of the cost in two parts. There is the door itself, and there is the labor to hang it.

Full-view doors show the most of your entry door. Mid-view and high-view doors have a solid panel at the bottom. That panel holds up better to kids, pets and bumps.

Labor is often a few hundred dollars on top of the door. Put together, most installed storm doors land somewhere between about $400 and $1,500. Labor on Long Island tends to cost more than the national average.

Treat these as typical ranges, not a quote. Prices change by brand and by store. Your final number depends on the door and the opening.

A few details move the price more than people expect. These are the main ones.

• The door itself. Full-view glass, roll-away screens and heavier frames cost more. So do custom colors.
• Size. Most storm doors come in standard widths like 32 and 36 inches. Odd sizes may need a custom order, which costs more and takes longer.
• The trim around your entry door. A storm door mounts to that trim. Soft or rotted wood has to be fixed first.
• An out-of-square doorway. Older houses settle over time. The installer may need extra time to get a tight, even fit.
• Hardware. A keyed deadbolt, a second closer or an upgraded handle set adds cost.
• Removing an old storm door. Taking down and hauling away the old one adds a little labor.

A storm door adds a layer in front of your entry door. It shields the main door from rain and wind. With the screen in, it also lets a breeze through the house.

It can make an entry feel less drafty in winter. It will not fix a main door that is warped, rotted or leaking. In that case, entry door replacement is the better use of the money.

This step is easy to miss. Some entry door makers warn about heat buildup. A glass storm door can trap heat against the main door. On a sunny door, that heat can damage the finish or the door itself.

Read the warranty on your entry door before you buy. Some makers limit coverage when a storm door is added. Does your door get strong afternoon sun? Ask about a storm door with a screen or vents you can open.

Ask for a written quote that lists each part of the job. It makes quotes easy to compare. A clear quote covers these items.

• The door's brand and model, plus its color and glass type
• Hardware, including the handle set and closers
• Removal and disposal of the old storm door
• Any trim repair needed before the new door goes on
• Labor, cleanup and any warranty on the install work

If a quote just says "storm door installed," ask for the model. Two quotes can look alike and cover very different doors.

A few simple choices keep the price in check without buying a flimsy door.

• Pick a standard size if your doorway allows it.
• Choose a stock color like white.
• Skip upgrades you will not use.
• Get two or three written quotes for the same model.

The cheapest door is not always the best value. A thin frame can bend over time and stop closing well.

A standard storm door install usually takes a few hours. Trim repair or an out-of-square opening can add time. Custom sizes also add a wait before the install, since they have to be ordered.

Storm doors are a common DIY project. The hard part is getting the door square so it closes and latches cleanly. If your doorway is out of square, hiring a pro is often worth it.
